Ride Day #16 East Helena MT to Townsend MT. Against the wind the entire time. Day 16. East Helena MT to Townsen. Only 28 miles. 1041 feet of climb. LoL

The guys woke up early this morning but because of the temperature weren’t in a hurry to start. We headed to breakfast where we met Tim. Buck overheard him talking with a grunt and said he was in the Philippines. I had to go ask Tim a question and found out he was an Ash Warrior. He is a retired fire captain who sold everything and now lives in his RV. He’s been in Helena about. Month now and has enjoyed his hiking adventures here.

After about 3 miles of riding they hit road destruction. The highway was taken down to dirt and being rebuilt. The detour was on dirt/gravel.

At the first break Alan took off his “rain coat”.

At the 2nd break there was a game plan made to load up in Townsend and head to Three Forks to see the headwaters of the Missouri River. While in Three Forks lunch will be at the Iron Horse Cafe & Pie Shop.

That water is the Missouri River along Hwy 12

Joel Wise on a FB Veterans page suggested the Mustang Motel in Townsend. He said it’s clean but outdated. I drove on to the motel and tried to get some information at the front desk. Jim just moved here last week from Helena and didn’t know anything. we couldn’t find the room and circled the place a couple of times. Jim came out and pointed and said it was in the adjacent building. We found it, the room number is painted on the building down low. The door is hidden by a Coke machine.

Buck’s quote. Short ride BUT the wind kicked my arse!

Al’s quote. Only 28 miles, but the headwind made it feel like a full day’s ride.
