They got taken off about 0800 With a temperature of 65° and overcast. According to the spreadsheet today is a 2 day ride covering 132 miles ending in LaPorte IN.

We were supposed to meet 4 miles in at a crossing leaving them 13 miles till the first break. When they got to the first spot I had found a restroom and Alan called and said they were ok and riding on to the break area 17 miles in.

The guys are on bicycle trail a LOT today. Alan has given me names of trailheads or businesses to meet them at. All I have to do is put that in the gps and drive this is turning out to be a LOW stress day!

When they arrived for their break it was 73° with high clouds. I’m sure more sunscreen will be applied. They took on some water, one cleaned his chain/rear sprocket and they took off toward the next rendezvous spot 13 miles away. I headed to a gas station and filled up for a cheap $5.67/gal and then headed to the break spot. It’s in a strip mall with some dinky trees but I did find shade to park in.

Do you remember those breaks where they would jump in the car with the heat on full blast? I DON’T think that will be the rest of today OR the next 2 days.

After a lengthy lunch stop inside at Subway they took off for 8.6 miles 1/2 way from lunch to Joliet. The clouds have thickened up blocking out sunlight but the humidity sure is here. It’s 7.9 miles to Joliet Iron Works Historic Site.

After some water in/water out it was time to ride on. They started with a bridge with a dedicated bicycle lane. The bicycle trail they were on went right behind a Meier in Mokena IL where they ended. Ending temperature of 89° and a heat index of 101°.

Buck’s quote: Brutal humidity today… heat index was 104 at around 4:00. Gonna try an early start tomorrow to try and beat the heat a little.

Al’s quote. Great route around Chicago. But I struggled in the afternoon heat.

Day 38. Elgin IL to Mokena IL. 62 miles. 1,844 feet of climb. Mostly trails mixed with roads through Chicago suburban neighborhoods.
