Ride Day #49 Spring Gap MD to Dam 5 MD

ODOMETER OVER 3,000 miles today!

They are getting ready to continue the journey. The new trail they started was a COMPLETE disappointment compared to the dream trail they had just completed. Clear skies & 63° as they begin the day. I think they ought to be on the trail by about 0740.

With the condition of the trail they decided they would stop at every trailhead to do an “equipment check”. 1st stop-Old Town

Steve was at Old Town preparing to take photos of dragon flies with a group on a nature adventure. He spent some time visiting with the guys and told them what to expect along the trail today.

Paw Paw Campground

After a short break and discussion they were off to Little Orleans, but first they had to walk about 0.8 mile over the PawPaw Tunnel since it is closed. I told them I’d see them in 13 miles.

On my way to 15 mile creek campgrounds I was on a REMOTE 10 mile road. I drove 6.5 miles before I met another vehicle! Once I was in the parking lot there were a LOT of people showing up to float in the Potomac River. I talked with one couple who was headed toward the tunnel and told the to ask riders coming toward them if they were the NUMBBUNS.

They took a break & lunch out of the back of the vehicle. After lunch they took a dip in the Potomac to cool off before the next leg.

I beat them to the designated break spot by about 3 minutes, my route was twice as long.

They stopped for less than 5 minutes and took off for Hancock since they were looking for water to get in again. Hancock has a boat launch so they thought they’d get in there.

3,000 MILES COMPLETED! A dip in the Potomac River

We talked to a Scout Leader who was with a bunch from TX who were working on their canoeing mb. Then the guys wanted 11 more miles. That takes us to Big Pool mm 112.5. They have about 12 more miles left for the day’s goal. During this next break it should be time to find a room for the night.

I got a text saying they were about 8-9 miles out. Alan had a flat tire! 1st and hopefully last one in over 3,000 miles.

Poor Alan!

After a break at Fort Frederick And the Director of Lodging finding a place for the night, they were off for a few more miles.

At 1800 the temperature is 87° with a heat index of 93°.

Buck’s quote: Another hot day…. We were able to cool off in the Potomac River a couple of times. Washington DC seems like it’s right around the corner now.

Al’s quote. It nice to celebrate our 3000th mile. But dang! It was hot. I pushed my body’s limits today.

Day 49. Spring Gap MD to Clear Spring MD. 69 miles. 1,461 feet of climb. Closed tunnel with a 1.5 mile detour hike (with bike) up and over. Very warm. Multiple dips in the Potomac River to cool. First flat tire of the trip. Al struggled with the heat.
